The Gentlemen’s Sport of Cricket
at
Hotel Sanur Beach
Sanur
– Bali, April 2006… Hotel Sanur Beach has had the pleasure to host a
team of well known former Australian cricketers who toured Bali to promote
their game and demonstrate Australia’s support for the island and its
people. Playing under the name
‘Garuda Indonesia Aussie Legends’ were:
Jo Angel, Ryan Campbell, David Colley, Wayne Holdsworth, Paul Wilson,
David Fitzgerald and Richard Chee Quee.
This goodwill trip was
organized and sponsored by Garuda Indonesia in an effort to strengthen
social ties between Australia and Bali through sport. The team was
comprised of First-Class cricketers who played a series of friendly
matches against Indonesian players, initiated coaching workshops and
visited local schools to establish an awareness of cricket amongst Bali
youngsters.
During the 6-day tour,
the Australian cricketers and their small media entourage stayed
exclusively at Hotel Sanur Beach (www.sanurbeachhotelbali.com)
and enjoy the tranquil setting of this family-orientated beachfront
property. A unique arrival was planned to greet the team where they were
transported into the hotel grounds by traditional horse & cart and a ‘tek-teken’
parade made up of staff members formed an enthusiastic welcoming
committee.
General Manager of Hotel
Sanur Beach , Mr. Christoph Voegeli, hosted a Balinese style cocktail
reception for the Australian cricketers followed by a casual BBQ dinner on
the beach at the new Tirta Seafood Restaurant. During their stay the team
was also treated to a special breakfast in the Spa garden where they were
introduced to local media representatives and had an opportunity to
reflect on the success of the trip.
Mr. Christoph Voegeli
commented, “Hotel Sanur Beach was delighted to host the Australian
cricketers and have them foster an appreciation for the game of cricket
amongst the Balinese. The language of sport is universal and the timing of
this trip was also quite significant. Given that Australian and Indonesian
authorities have certain issues to sort out, the people of Australian have
always had a strong affinity with the island of Bali and its peace loving
people. Hopefully we will see many more social exchanges such as this in
the future.”
